Visit Soundcloud to enjoy Gaelin Meyer’s folk rock song “My Time” which was written to protest the current Assisted Dying laws – or listen to it right here.
It seems no coincidence, that the song’s title leans so closely towards Dignity South Africa’s own slogan ‘Legalise Assisted Dying | my life ~ my coice’.

Many thanks to Gaelin Meyer and Duncan Mackay for providing it to DignitySA!

My Time

Take my name and
write it in your book of names
you can give me a number,
you can capitalise me
and your rules can govern
all the places I go
and the plants that I grow
and you can throw my body
in jail for eating from a dish that you don’t like
You’ve been making rules my whole damn life
but now I’m going to draw the line

Cos when I wanna go I’m gonna go
one day I’ll be ready to die and I will be ready
I hope to live a long and happy life
but when I am ready to die I’m gonna die

But the judges and the jury
they don’t believe in me, they don’t know me at all
so perhaps they should all step aside and concede
that they really have no right at all
to be stomping around in their very big boots
at the end when I am facing down eternity
they’re busy laying the law, like an inversion of mercy.

When my times comes
I don’t want to face it alone
I want to gather my kin
so they can sit beside me
and for once I can say all that I’ve got to say
and I can choose the day
and I can set the timing
of my journey home
and when I’m ready I’ll hold my lover’s hand
and as I pass my family will stand and raise a glass to me

Cos when I wanna go I’m gonna go
one day I’ll be ready to die and I will be ready
I hope to live a long and happy life
but when I am ready to die I’m gonna die

Thanks again to Gaelin Meyer and Duncan Mackay for “My Time”!
